Today we were taking care of Kyrie and Leo's daughter Astra for her people, so I decided that the girls needed a play-date! I hope you will enjoy the photos. We went out just before dawn and then the sun came up. :)

Astra says HELLO! She is a white/buff plush girl from Kyrie's litter with Leo, and is 20 months old. :)

Hi everyone! Well, Kyrie and her fans have inspired a new project. I thought I would share it with you here.

Ever since I started writing here about Charles P. "Chuck" Eisenmann and his dogs who played The Littlest Hobo on TV and in movies, I have received comments and emails from some very cool people who shared their memories of Chuck and his dogs with me. I can't even tell you how touching this has been, to receive this series of thank-you notes from complete strangers. Many times I've been moved to actual tears. Because of all of you, I have decided to go ahead with this project.

I will be attempting to write a non-fiction book about Chuck and his dogs. I say "attempting" because I've never written non-fiction before. This project is somewhat daunting to me, but I think it needs to be tried. I don't want Chuck and his dogs to fade into obscurity, foot-noted on a few websites, subject of stories and rumors because no one ever wrote down how things happened and that's it. Chuck's books are out of print. There are dang few resources on the web--if there were more, y'all wouldn't have found me and Kyrie, here. :)

I've created a new blog and have a new email specifically for communicating about this project, because I'll need some help. You can read more about it here, on the blog:
The Littlest Hobo Book Project - littlehoboblog.blogspot.com

The whole story of what and why is there--you can also look there for updates on the project in the future. Thanks so much, everyone, for reading. I hope to see you on the other side of the book!Anne F.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14442385165430082302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7479006061282443185.post-44970930791287968922012-08-03T14:38:00.000-07:002012-08-03T14:38:32.761-07:00Kyrie/Piston Puppies!

On May 29, 2012, Kyrie gave birth to six healthy, rambunctious puppies! As of this week they have all gone to their forever homes except for one--Blazie, the little sable girl, who we kept. :) You can see Blazie's blog here:

Margaret and David at Victory generously shared photos of Piston for us to post, such as the one below. Piston is a gorgeous black and grey sable boy with a rock-solid temperament, tons of confidence and an impressive presence! Combined with Kyrie's easy-to-train intelligence and sweetness we expect some really wonderful pups!

Kyrie went in for her x-rays yesterday, to make sure the pups were still in there, and we saw the little skeletons! This will be a smaller litter, so it will be easier on Kyrie (and also on Zak and I!). Above you can see Kyrie in her brand-new whelping box. She loves to go in there for treats. When it's almost time for pups, we will put x-pens around the box to keep her close to it.

Stay tuned for puppies, everyone! Due sometime between March 18th and the 27th! :) If you missed our litter announcement banner and our collage of Leo and Kyrie's ancestors and close relatives (who the pups may resemble), take a look at the last post from 2010. :)Anne F.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14442385165430082302noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7479006061282443185.post-19157415430650587792010-11-20T16:08:00.001-08:002011-01-07T13:30:01.187-08:00Future Kyrie Puppies??Could it be? Yes, it's true! This January we will be breeding Kyrie with our Champion sire, Leo, for the first time! This means that if you would like to get on the list for a Kyrie/Leo pup, you will need to fill out the New Zion puppy application, which you can find here on the NZS site.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 215px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic02hjz6V0Fzuirzr6H755BbPOynHoqEFvgR4tqP9q3GDz8Kc51LiMAdFCmDiGMP9473Bcy-6Jx942ke-D5wOPxkNzluQlwbf-F1mMEotJwCSSDdUDJeIGdM6FR7FGZ2cjeoqoV5Frp6g/s400/KyrieLeo_final.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541795078900694770" />
Above you'll see the collage of littermates and ancestors of Kyrie and Leo. We put together these collages because often pups will resemble their ancestors more than their parents! From left to right and top to bottom, you can see:

Row One: Acer, Leo's sire; Tucker, Kyrie's twin brother
Row Two: Chester, Kyrie's younger brother; Granddam Tang; Grandsire Grizz
Row Three: Scout, Kyrie's sire; Leo's littermate MC and littermate Nana
Row Four: Leo; Leo's dam Holly
Row Five: Kyrie; Grandsire Storm

Because Holly looks quite a bit like Kyrie, we expect quite a few brown sables with cream in this litter. Because Leo has reddish coloring and so does Kyrie's grandpa Storm, we may get some reddish pups in this litter, too! We have the chance for white/buff pups, and a small chance for solid blacks. We may even get a "Hobo" pup with markings like Kyrie...I am crossing my fingers!

We hope you're just as excited about this litter as we are!! Please join us in wishing luck to the happy couple on their upcoming "wedding" day! :)Anne F.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14442385165430082302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7479006061282443185.post-43703600535450859492010-09-13T20:28:00.001-07:002010-09-13T22:00:34.390-07:00Chuck Eisenmann & The Littlest Hobo Tribute<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMNbcpLVFw6XiKwAty9PGxevPYu5-SWhDwL9DTKJnoCsyePVbrGb_CwAKbd2I3cUXcSxZMtrO-67Ko3tirGDml1F4AYt1iKx46C3NgSwdY7I838Qi0EWa5K1E0-cYLbuAkyxeihKCXwug/s400/FourWithChuck.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516622044609776818" />
Many other sources have already reported that Charles P. Eisenmann, owner and trainer of the Shepherd dogs who played London, The Littlest Hobo, in TV and movies from the fifties through the eighties, died on September 6, 2010, at the age of 91. I would like to dedicate this post to him.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmj_G2p3QBwT6ArbaT65DNdULR6rPV-DUEzX6LdvAF6tB87v6D6y-MYg8LMxVx8cYjKHTkMRXezquD3QXHPwqkYif-IeM-cu_icCXaU1s6rwbLzNK336OZF-SlXC6jAGTTIHqwcBB5Jbo/s400/LondonPawprint.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516621009745336402" />
The photos that you will see throughout are scans from Chuck's books or actual Littlest Hobo dogs publicity prints I own, distributed over the decades from the sixties to the eighties. I have obtained some of them via a Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club of America board member who was kind enough to put them up for sale to benefit the club; others, most especially the beautiful color print from 1984, I received when a friend of Chuck's died and some of his estate was liquidated at auction. Possibly the most precious ones I received from Chuck's secretary once upon a time, a lovely lady whose auction I managed to win--gaining a photo which included the only two female Hobo dogs, Raura and Venus. I hope she finds the time to write up her memories of Chuck, as she told me she wished to do while we corresponded.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 316px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVk4nUDzllZ0GFxOjGWqxUxLQyaZQVxySX1yj2_Qc6uU0FC4-H42joQ0yqt8xedlsfSkc1zH3DQi6rlLTGjmzEkbZdQANhSuqDxVVmpumN_irOCoZEnu63IjEgtXWZOBKbU-YkbSRqRV0/s400/FourWithGirls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516622061665826514" />
For the Christmas of 2008 I sent Chuck a Christmas card--it may never have reached him at his Oregon nursing home, but I enclosed a photo of Kyrie and a heartfelt thanks for the books and tours he had done with his dogs over the years. Now he is gone, but he lived a great life. He was one of "the most important figures in American military baseball in Europe during World War II" according to Gary Bedingfield's "Baseball In Wartime" blog (thanks Mr. Bedingfield for digging up so much about Chuck that I never knew!). You can find that post in Mr. Bedingfield's blog (and some lovely photos of London farther down in it) at baseballinwartime.blogspot.com .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 319px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyfsJRxAtRE2dOsKoU0jqdHowYEx7qQ4m5ufk5kZ0ECA0F5Q0JZKLb_GCx-9kIOFg8whFKUVgy6HTjVO3fu7xXnfbC1vP9UZpoKRh5Pp3JeLF_bwxwG6hwP2d6jgf1wKXNJwqsWJbSUT4/s400/FourInField.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516621028514250786" />
Chuck gave up professional baseball when "the dog started showing signs of greatness". London, his German Shepherd, had accompanied him everywhere--he was even included in contracts Chuck signed with the teams he played for! Born in 1951, London was five years old before he was first mentioned in the Bismark Tribute, when Chuck came out on the field and did a show with him for the entertainment of the crowd.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 321px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigVr6-H9tDXqKSF8ccMpOrnljNm-yaPFiT5L2AXnSiICNEelRXODPWSf4CuXTgZedPwALSq8392bC4yAiJcoSRSUuSgpXzwHak9JF21KA9u8n-BD8pT3BCbeut-CDYsgc4NgzHcODfm1E/s400/FayesFourDown.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516621018585629170" />
The newspaper notes that London ran the bases when asked to. Later, after an incident with London that cost his team a game, London got a Life magazine spread, and was asked to perform at Watertown, again to entertain fans. There, Chuck tried to prove his dog's intelligence by doing everything BUT specifically asking him to "run the bases". Biographer David Malcolmson writes about it in London: The Dog Who Made The Team:

"London," asked Chuck, "Do you know where you are?"
Here was a concept he had never put into words with his dog, but it was within London's power.
Even Chuck could never quite get used to the way his dog would respond. London looked around him, not at the stands now, but at the two dugouts, then at the diamond behind him. To London, the best of all places in the outdoor world was a baseball diamond. His tail wagged a little.
The people could not help but see something of this. Probably to many of them it would be merely another sign that the man had rehearsed his dog well. It would do no good for Chuck to have Hank broadcast: "My dog has never before been asked this question."
Chuck went on, "Suppose, London, suppose out there on this diamond a game is going on. Suppose you are on the team. London, you're playing baseball!"
The spell was on them both. Chuck told himself, go slow! go slow! They must be made to see it. If it happens too fast, it will look like just another trick. If the stands could be made to see..."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 272px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheIZGA8WdWl-2MxVjkevgLusXeXC6lzvsrovmD6mHBErwyiwpZz3uUAhQhOPmBz1ALDDwI-XnL7TFFnz2LYM3vgBHL6e3ttDDBlVVP_MeVOdzEQpeoxAqq9zpwKg-rWJLD-jod1hmjyCg/s400/Stop!Sit!andThink.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516627217220136258" />
Chuck tried his best to make the stands see--and London, using only the words Chuck told him: "Home Run" "You've hit the ball out of the park" "you've hit your homer. Go ahead" DID understand what Chuck was asking. He ran the bases! Even after that, most in the stands seemed to not understand that the dog had been reasoning out what to do based on English words--not on a memorized command. But, Malcolmson writes, one person at least who saw a tape of later, similar performances did:

"One of the shows that followed was seen by a woman who wrote in to the "You Asked For It" television program. She asked for the dog who thinks like a man.
Her letter opened up, for London and for Chuck, Hollywood's golden gate."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 319px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVGhJJd6zbntIxi0-PQD1yZev5eLg5BVTfw4MzZ-tdhMnxXo0R-zbxoGvqhA-NO78r8LlSQV3HHSA5R1uEMfyRpfycSZGTaN03vicUjK479YBACI6Bv8F7-Vfc2n54gLw5lEgv2NVbgPo/s400/FourOnLadder.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516621032713446050" />

"You Asked For It" was London's big break, and he was soon in demand for other shows, other appearances, and then a 1958 feature-length movie: The Littlest Hobo. He was a man far ahead of his time--a man who believed that by educating instead of training dogs, by teaching with observation, faith, and empathy instead of shoving them around with brute force, you could teach them to think like you or I. And every owner of a real Shiloh Shepherd today knows that he was right.Anne F.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14442385165430082302noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7479006061282443185.post-5008622143854426622010-04-30T12:28:00.000-07:002010-04-30T12:50:51.409-07:00Kyrie's Wonderful Winter!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN3ZhslluYZVqY-Dgu8NfbkNKNOQd5sFzmOt_MfczceTiH_SvIIfybNZG6os92GG49yvjhdntXESAbu3mOTWuzI9mkl6USn_zkRuqHBss-y-ujOo1L-C6okFo1mUYCLBg2MKQaByyzafM/s400/Kyrie_right.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466016304434258962" />
Time to catch up on some blogging! Kyrie had a winter full of her favorite thing--SNOW! Snow is very rare here in the DFW area; we didn't get any at all during the Winter of 2008-2009. Usually we get one snow day, with a few inches of snow. This year, we got three or four days of it--and once we got eight inches, crazy for this area! We even had snow on Christmas morning, which hadn't happened in 80-some years!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 272px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5yV5EnbE9UdRbjXCgTvOIuVGcYyGs6Nz9F6Kon-vlusmZJ7O5-1VnnQDGaDytAJJKFZN2zpsBVxup_vsW0cFYV8XJOopuVZanaE41W8Pu1Bk8ZLq1Hw6T48ab7zt4Mhao2Lhl5FIVtJk/s400/Snowkyrie_welcome.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466019756354169970" />
Without further ado, we would like to share some photos of Kyrie enjoying her snowy winter. :) Here is the very cute snowy-faced Kyrie, blinking:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM0YNXEpPiK7bxZDpPeibRMIWtaoePQJiNNhxFNY3TkZDYaWvsf9s2OaiJ1Uq971R_r3yPb5lARagITBayV_9v8rJ6q7I046_laD5qDdktjVYLXkluEZXvPMuAFKEnctvS2YzWfkrh-vY/s400/SnowKyrie.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466016302288975906" />
Kyrie at a full run with her "I love snow!!" face:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 370px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgT6S9zv6GY62ahibdZ80y2Ez0WauCiIjAd8zqME-tWiJozPplBLMCvtY0C-swOQ7uTWTm0HmlhBzC_nQIcUTSEYjinP8_AZtepkTUfjwRnIPRG4RytUBIxVufTRuTXOKOBbbUlyrnX40/s400/Snowkyrie2010_7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466015722974620354" />
Kyrie is deeper in the snow than she's ever been! Our housemate John suggested doing them in a cupcake pan...and they became "Pupcakes"!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr7P3RE3fofBMeI7rl-5kCiRHX452TSc7JUGv1E8VmmxuTKSUnq13Dq-p9XyfoXULb1zeXi8CLXMne9v5MHu0iZOw3p_W8HL_8NbsZfb8vvQqAglfgKDPlSi6jHEAeVuuhgnzxKcfoFQY/s400/Pupcakes1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5426427490111008866" />
First I chopped two raw chicken breasts and added some shredded cheese.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo14APsrr-tXTVmXJPfBXxusK79V8iKPwgFYlN1ojZVco3hGMsKSnfn68xwqXlFIPAdpou_JtHdqpSxQ0ic_fyLIpbgui45SvsMii3XQyzuHxS-1a8P6CynTAaMPAiiRhanQDLTVn9Dk8/s400/Pupcakes2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5426427484955382770" />
Then I added one egg and mixed it all together. A little bit of flour was added to stiffen the mixture; you could also use other things if your dog was allergic to grains. Ground up kibble might work?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYaqVGCt4gxwOI1ydijevdMh70TfpCP64vC1aSGkY7wjMn5ZqmKxV0KcD37Ir6fUmfxbLkG1cK32ekf7sgzoUV_Is0iCMSoeZkYGyegPKQH4vFfzuYWdLFdEa_qtJonboy66TIRZfF9P0/s400/Pupcakes3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5426427480889894370" />
The mixture was spooned into cupcake spaces treated with a little bit of oil so they would come out easily after baking. I thought that a special treat basket would be nice, something no one could get around here. Luckily, my husband flies to Indianapolis every week, and north of Indy in Carmel, IN, they have a DOG BAKERY!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 219px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT6qt5ZFD0Q2mI81OMAFATki_bwP2_SNbJ7atbNPZZYZlFY5duc6z9wUwBen8X8Z5Q8ca46tp9xdTEA9XNA5xHi5f_PiqNnZoJK4TAe-oMfe0crD9Mr9pqxTriOUWW53D52T-kPeOER_0/s400/Thebakery.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387862465436527202" />
There are all sorts of different biscuits and treats that they make by hand! So then a buying spree ensued, and I had all these treats and a couple of containers. And then I thought, "Hmmm, I could make up little sample trick or treat bags for EACH DOG!" Thus followed a Hobby Lobby shopping spree hard on the heels of the treat-buying one. At the end of the day as I sat down at 10 p.m. to construct everything I had six different kinds of treats plus all the flavors of biscuits, two fancy containers and a bunch of gift bags. Here is a shot of all the treats and also the little ziplock packages for the little bags. Each ziplock has six different types of treats, just a few of each. They are sealed with autumn stickers. (I failed to resist the urge to be cute. Just wait. It gets worse.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLNisFtB7DFwIz1PJ_aVk4EMURXasZ4D2cGR_V-BV5_J6BC31xb0S28XVlA-g0_SPZxnH2SD6ECbxhsstiyN4MNsdpG0fkSo0DzM34aAuf_TcYsy1Fkp1kDr76x_qAwnJnQzMckOOK2xw/s400/Treatspackages.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387862487333526850" />
While at the Hobby Lobby I was struck by a mad urge to go crazy. This happens to me often at Hobby Lobby. The result was several spools of Halloween ribbon, black and orange pipe cleaners, yellow and orange tissue paper, a bunch of stickers, and small wooden pumpkins. Too cute? Too silly? Too orange??? Will Ken want to die when I hand him one of these for Big Jake??

Absolutely! But did I care, at midnight when I finished this? Heck no! Following you can see samples. We gave out around a hundred trifolds (thanks to the parents of the splendid Cody for bringing more!) and bunches of business cards! Two other Shilohs came to visit--Cody from Texas and Kaiser from Oklahoma! You can see pictures of them in our Picasa Albums gallery (click here). All in all it was a lot of fun and we will definitely do it again next year!!

Here is a purebred German Shepherd we met at the show--one of the very rare few who have the "Hobo dog" markings just like Kyrie! Proof that the coloration is still lurking in the GSD lines too, and isn't just due to the Malamute behind the Shilohs.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 284px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTbRvmThP0Oe5gqEgKL_Mype5gvahQ5uiPQV-_N_7OWDeP4GaprNTPmU04DcBe9rFZLKIrdJy4UOz48fU1D481s0rH8hobgHnAeaUTXE01PYX0vBRwXrwBXtXIboUYzwKd3vhHSnkyZEM/s400/HoboGSD.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350700003856707730" />
Those of you who have followed our blog for Leo know that we LOVE to take photos of our dogs playing! Shiloh shepherds often come into their first heat a little later than smaller breeds, and Kyrie was a perfect example of this, going into heat at 15 months.

Now there are a few things we need to do. In order for Kyrie to pass muster for breeding so she can help in our genepool expansion, we must take her in for her height and weight assessment, we must have her hips x-rayed (and while we do that we will probably also do as many other health tests as possible), and she must pass her Temperament Test. Then all her paperwork must be updated accordingly. So we have a lot to do within the next four to six months if we want to have a chance at Kyrie/Leo puppies at the end of this year or the beginning of next!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXzOFqc3coW0E1SsN6ICnMsKyhgZfn1WYg5UFbPwNTb_jia1rT3Xgccj7jz-4IqB_iHIU_ipAfv8ZtBG3lyt0mdSG2m58fIDcOBdqVplzwIS_2Z-4y-_eoKIqNGtVLY3W0zyUubMc6FQA/s400/Kyrwithpants3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330166434971075234" />
So far Kyrie's heat has been no sweat. We bought her two sets of pants (thankfully we were able to find the denim ones so Kyr was not forced to wear a set of hot pink "hot pants") and have been using normal human sanitary pads in them (much cheaper than the ones made for them!). The heat started on the 16th of April. We noticed some blood drips on the floor and Zak made an emergency "pants run"! Now, thirteen days later, her bleeding is tapering off and becoming a straw color, pinkish/light tan. Here is Zak puttin' on the pants while Kyrie is a good girl and stands nicely!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLh-joeW_VWB0r6l-alVSfgiOw-JdQMMHbf-aU7oCJZanM6kZztGs4Sak-1RitCK7IW0Egec-XYu-2hMjpQ7s71I8B-3QfDPe0L4sR327nHS-M93N3_dJHDd6i2wTj7Bp2aOA24dRUr5M/s400/Kyrputtinonpants.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330166426601111858" />
Our boy Leo (you can see his blog here) has been very good during this whole thing! He lays outside of Kyrie's crate and whines a bit, and obviously wants to be with her, but he has been very well-behaved. We'll see if that lasts now that she is entering the "standing heat" period! We have laid pretty good groundwork for this period by spending a lot of individual time with our pups, so they are very used to one of them being in a kennel while the other is out. Since they are so used to it being this way, we have had no problem separating them during this period. They do miss running and playing together, though!!

Below you can see a back shot of Kyr. The sanitary pads we are using are up on the table behind her, if you are wondering what size fits the pants!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0Z_NZmfvaylmToIcc0wojXPQ8PNsFRYIuPMrvpKFys-3A3dvZPrpKrDrDN4xNAO8eqVAJaUPb8R5ToeBKbAWLSENuGYzMOZCHWACsLXqduc-_v0LApdchtpEXdQHIsWSRlRfeh0f0dPg/s400/Kyrwithpants2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330166428018660818" />
Many dogs lose their appetites when there is a bitch in heat nearby, but so far Leo is eating well, though he picks at the food a bit more before eating and it takes him longer to finish. Kyrie's appetite remains good! We have upped her food intake just a little, perhaps 5%, in accordance with the advice in a book recommended to us by Laura Kathryn of Solace Shilohs, one of our awesome ISSR Licensed Breeders. Kyrie is such a Skinny Minnie that I figured the extra calories couldn't hurt too much, even if she doesn't need them with all the changes in her body right now!

Finally, we bought Kyrie a new toy to celebrate. It was such a nice spring day we went outside to take some new pictures of Kyrie. :) We are very proud of our girl as this past month she graduated from her Basic Obedience class. We had "home-schooled" her up to that point but decided to do the class for socialization and testing with distractions. It has worked wonders for her confidence levels with people and dogs! Now we are in a beginning Rally class because our teacher decided we were advanced enough to skip intermediate obedience, and Kyrie is the youngest dog in the class. :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 310px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU5SOrhXyKHVjipbxLqRZg6-tSuIEmTH3QWimD7PxRmx0XS9h40ChyYWLawWUiXjk0r1YkM7D_b9Meqvv0tO1M0684mB7smJKup3l90_SK76rCR8at3QH2gs74HQKZsaYM1PMpEu6U2t0/s400/KyriediplomabasicOB.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315349559322666562" />

Here are some pictures of Kyrie from today. She came in third behind Leo and Christi Tanon's beautiful Bruno, who is growing up into a gorgeous dog! Following are the judge's comments:

"Developing well, slow maturing. Needs self confidence in ring. Coat: Good Texture! Head still developing, scissor bite, dark eyes, ears erect, deep chest with moderate bone. Back angulation: Well Angulated. Topline near level with slight slope. Well set tail, movement a little close in front. Rating: SG-1." The SG-1 rating means Kyrie will get a young adult Champion title from the IABCA if she gets another two of those ratings! We will need to be sure to show her in June and see how she does!

This place was so amazing that I made time between shows to take pictures! I wish we lived closer to Austin, I swear I would be here every weekend! Here is the front of the main building, where the rings were set up. Tina had always said that Kyrie was the more cautious type, more inclined to watch and figure things out, less like Leo who was just a rambunctious people-lover. Sure enough, Kyrie was growing up!

One of the side effects of this very alert and reactive period--some people call it a fear period, but it's really just the dog growing out of the oblivious puppy phase--was that Kyrie started to display a more aloof and sometimes outright shy nature. We didn't want to encourage the shyness, so we launched a triple-pronged socialization plan! Phase one of the plan was for me to take Kyrie to work more often, to remove her from her "safe" home environment and expose her to new people. So I took one of our extra baby gates to work, and Kyrie accompanied me a couple days a week for a few weeks in a row. During that time we did notice that she became better about meeting new people, though she was still a very submissive girl and did not like people to "loom" over her (she is much more likely to approach when they kneel down to her level) and she preferred to have me greet the people with her. When we were not encouraging my co-workers to visit, she would park herself next to my chair, just like in the picture!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV-FfXdHi8QdsMgCtt9EHSqgLg0cSujwxj8bQ9xtH9Z73eCNGMwwXINTqKokMvp6fJHcpA-9GuDfKYeL9w8CxkOkQ0FWslzX4iB0JVTgM00BY2LkiEdjEftsu5iexURzvqrt365UyRZfc/s400/Kyratwork2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301748265715547778" />

At one point later on I was talking to Jessica of Strauss Haus Shiloh Shepherds, one of our excellent ISSR Licensed Breeders. She told me about her own aloof, high-energy girls. It turned out that Jessica's girls had gone through this same phase that Kyrie was going through, at the same age! I was very relieved when I found that out. Jessica encouraged us to keep working with Kyrie and said that if we continued to socialize it would all work out just fine!

Our two other socialization methods included attending a big dog show in Hutto and enrolling Kyrie in Obedience class! We love her dearly and are very happy with her sweet temperament and incredible intelligence. For her first birthday I wanted to do what I did with Leo's blog (you can see his if you follow this link) and put up some pictures of her littermates! Unfortunately, unlike Leo's Holly/Acer '07 litter, we could not stay in contact with most of the pups' families as they grew. The pictures I have are mostly cobbled together and taken at many different ages, but we hope that you will enjoy them anyway! I would like to also give credit where it is due--these pictures are property of New Zion Shilohs and Silver Run Shilohs, except for the ones of Kyrie which of course are ours. ;)

Here is Kyrie at just before one year (it was a lousy day but we wanted to get some pics anyway!).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkL_yrXqxhiYruPOWBVSGz7hP0h1ufdMRGkSWIr1j6DNnFWJaJvHICpZhvgy_IgL2yZgT64Pbizt0X8Dw2WErBPcgbfjEAYCI_XRGznetyyuAA_JE_dtZJ4s8aWfLwTRbcLraX2S-rI7E/s400/XmasKyr.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293464735026874546" />

If you would like to see pictures of Kyrie and her siblings when they were only nine weeks old, follow this link to Tina Barber's New Zion Shiloh Shepherds website! Here is a picture of her as an older pup--what a sweet face!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7YrK5Nh7bkX1GidWDkbdh86VVQlBJfvADFchBRtnEpoHu9-PPEPW4oXBI7uLaTGdvc1PQtfYvOz-VPsxQ7rw5x9a54wXxcXZLswf6xlVe1aR8-bMdp5xCZpUSL4Ptrg2tXl_zfAycGw/s400/Myapup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293466420376885394" />

Next are Kyrie's two twin golden sable brothers! Happy is now called Moose, and boy did he clean up some awards at Homecoming last year! He was only seven months old in this picture:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2T0Wth29Xh4KA249T90F-LXnnPIZQSvf6DUvQ2YkN-I36ZSbl4cDZQS9wbVQlIn55QWVRnUaAOf_1EotcuLRvoQa-r_QeP6ILX2FY41keyM4QOlDmjLy7QiuqHeeC69VNi4bzXAW5pSE/s400/MooseHC08.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293469934680430210" />

And then there is Toes, now called Clancy! This picture was taken at around ten months old I think? He looks a lot like Kyrie in body style, and Moose in color!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_2OEmZw8vX7tArnuhP4xm-IuVGOrooKMiC2MWoeVqBa8pEnTS-74ljmREzUTpdjW3ulfoWnr9yLPfD3mMkOie3Qyjmd1cK-vAYkRXCCgCs4xr-qpIKwU5A-NrHC0Hv7w0xh_1g9gnVGc/s400/Clancybetter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296558583042250802" />

We don't have any pictures of Kyrie's brother Tug, who was the only plush male, except for this one from his eight weeks LER. He looks kind of like a plush version of Kyrie and Tank (now called Tucker)!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPc-EpwQvYWswAO06gcLEnTAUKwrf7yW5YkFftIv2AqQl49w5lJ8_t26fjmGbe-eLN1EvX93aGKjF3IbWBNhdr-avTBOOXqlZW7VDdrCjeD44N4JehC0IV3xtPZXRkYA9RF49rfVuGTGU/s400/tugpic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293470623150700082" />

And speaking of Tucker...what a gorgeous boy! I really love Tucker and once his owner Debbie has his page up at http://shepherdsridge.com I will be sure to drop the link in here for you to see some better pictures of him! For now, here's a pic at Homecoming, when he was seven months old. Above, you can see pictures of Kyrie side-by-side. The one on the left, with the floppy ear, was taken when she was six months old. Soon after this we attended Homecoming in New York and the daughter of our breed founder, Lisa Barber, showed me how to properly brace Kyrie's ear. A good ear brace needs to be light (we used moleskin), attached with a good non-latex skin adhesive (we bought some Torbot Bonding Cement, the same brand Lisa used), and also the right shape and size! Below I've included a picture of the brace. After the one we got at Homecoming fell out (it took Kyrie about two weeks to wear out a brace to the point where it would fall out), I kept it and used it as a pattern to cut new braces. :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 306px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf68Q_eTASKNccYngEo8mFUlHc0fQ_0dCmaBClv2rITiR4XtPV39STCA041Jmo1EyrdaWzGl5NWZFUYBZ4xLHqkaFvOPgHKU7NIl0pWdO2kINwyBz-GhyphenhyphenCXIPDTwX3ix7yBJIsC2XUfa0/s400/Earbrace.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277966995475351314" />

You can see that the brace is fairly large. Be sure to put its base near the base of the ear, so that it can work with the good support musculature and cartilage there where the ear meets the skull. You can also see that it is rounded; I realized that this shape helps to spread out the ear a bit so it can keep its proper shape. Lisa is one smart cookie! And she has LOADS of experience, of course!!

We did one further thing to the brace, and I would like to send a thank-you out to Buddha the ISSR Shiloh Shepherd's owners for their great blog on bracing his ears! In it they talk about how they used a product called Breathe-Right Nasal Strips to help give additional strength to the mole foam. As we were pretty sure that Kyrie's ear had a heavy crease on the outside edge that was keeping it from standing, we applied one of those nasal strips along the outer edge of the moleskin, for additional support. Here is a picture of Kyr in her pen at my workplace. I took her to work a lot with me until she got used to the braces, to make sure that she did not worry them out!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 295px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLCLtRDB6qoCYvhe5LHMJLbT7KTxFrO8qYsSt1cd9q-ajpX2IbAm3VZVGzNNf3CCNgIG_hDzuCTTtQHEdE9OG9fBCIursXqh51zSqG08JxFBqivV9IU-YdrFMEmYA3S746KFw7NhG75ns/s400/Kyrieatwork.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277969975569275746" />

We had been told that ear bracing was not something that got results overnight. After the first brace stayed in for two weeks and fell out, I was very disheartened because Kyrie's ear sagged again after only one hour. :( But we braced again, and two weeks later when it fell out her ear stayed up longer...three to four hours and the sag was not as bad. That still seemed like not enough change to me, and I was afraid that nothing would work! But we braced again...two more weeks and I put in another brace right away without seeing how long the ear would stay up this time--I didn't want to discourage myself!! So four weeks went by. I kind of screwed up that last brace because I didn't put it far enough down in the ear--it was a little wobbly. But even then, it seemed to be staying up...I was full of hope! Finally, when that brace fell out, we let it go and waited. The ear stayed up...it was up for good!!! The war of the ear was won!

It took us two months of bracing to override seven or eight months of floppy ear. Kyrie turns eleven months this Friday. I am very happy that this coming year, she will be able to go to the IABCA shows and participate! A floppy ear would have disqualified her. Lisa, Olga, Buddha's parents, and everyone who chimed in with ear tips on our wonderful Shiloh Shepherd Friends forum, we can't thank you enough for helping us to win the War of the Ear!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 277px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiffCsMfUcIhS1TzJQlDd51afhzreLUB3K7r9r3X46-tm89phksnJDlJHTHqfQ5rUUBmai8_ffTGN5mzn6wykH1fcwyw3PP_xjwdeIszmuXqugE4Ia6q0cEuilWtbUbcYzz436aDw_xfTA/s400/flyingtrotkyr.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278211578757030562" />Anne F.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14442385165430082302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7479006061282443185.post-56753266457246032622008-10-06T15:19:00.000-07:002008-10-07T09:57:06.797-07:00Kyrie's Colors, Part Two!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuW1tSvvSMWtoYRcOEIy9kDQtgDlRkJag29Uz66yPmdBGHnUq6VxzGWGWHCfVKgkfezT8Yx1S5lUVUi4QMLemmXoB5XNWfqrxZGgt7RbxLfKUbDXbJfmOrHGT4c19dCNYtW4Dfj2etBLs/s400/Londonhead.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254173969831287234" />

Back in the sixties a man named Charles "Chuck" P. Eisenmann got himself a German Shepherd pup to help out in his nightclub as a guard dog. But it soon became apparent that the pup, London, was no ordinary dog! He would go on to amaze talk show audiences, movie-goers, and TV fans alike by starring in his own movie and TV series, The Littlest Hobo. London, as far as anyone could tell, knew actual English. Chuck would give him a string of commands--not "sit, stand, stay" but "London, would you please sit there in that corner. Now please go stand by a picture of a horse. Can you find me something blue? Show it to me, please. London, I need a pencil (London would find Chuck a pencil and bring it to him without further prompting)." If you can find a copy of Chuck's book about educating dogs, Stop! Sit! and Think!, you can read actual newspaper clippings giving examples just like these, written by skeptical newspapermen who met Chuck and his dogs (London had a number of sons with his markings who later joined Chuck's pack and doubled for him in the TV series). Chuck eventually wrote four books and produced a video and an album (cover picture below).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU3DfzedXR1fHPp0bV3EwyhBwGAmXYqW_qyr9ruh4nGgj9CfYPPBGiXHvA5Z1ZJybFl-F-oqyOMsizly6q72ocRSa-ErpfmP0CcKdHhmIci9io7OpA_32IkSNIMUUQdADOGZKGNxKPnXU/s400/londondogs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254175098214930594" />

I didn't know anything about Chuck and his dogs until I encountered the Shiloh Shepherd, and then I heard plenty! Many people on our Shiloh forums are fans of Chuck and his teaching methods. The more I read about the Hobo dogs, the more I wanted to know! I started watching eBay and online used book websites for Chuck's books and searching the web for more information. Then Kyrie's pictures came up on Tina's website, and there was Tina saying that she thought Kyrie would be a "masked" dog--that she would look like London and his sons and daughters. I was hooked--I had to have her!! And I'm so glad that Zak gave in and we got her--she is incredibly intelligent, beautiful, an eager learner, and (though I doubt we will ever get her to stop chasing the cats) she is only getting more amazing!

Below: a comparison side-by-side of Kyrie at eight months next to the original London.
